At the dates of 26 – 27 September 2009, Vietnam Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (VSSMGE) held a seminar on the topic of “Geotechnics, quality management matters in the urban underground construction” in Ho Chi Minh City.
At the seminar, there was also the attendance of other leading professors, doctors, and operating businesses in the field of urban underground construction. The participants discussed the reports related to the construction of urban underground projects, in particular its technical solutions and management experience. The details was as followings:
- Report on a number of legal matters relating to urban underground construction – by MA. Ngo Dinh Tran KSCC
- Geotechnical problems regarding State low-cost housing program – by Prof. Dr. Le Duc Thang Tường cọ bản walling protection along the projects next to Mekong River – by Prof. Dr. Le Ba Luong
- Some issues on the load capacity of piles – by Prof. Dr. Le Duc Thang
- Some issues on assessment and management of risks in urban underground construction – by Associate Prof. Nguyen Ba Ke
- Technical problems and solutions of urban underground construction – by Associate Prof. Nguyen Van Hiep, deputy director of the Department of Construction of Ho Chi Minh City
- Strict control of groundwater dynamics and preventative measures to pit incidents – by Associate Prof. Nguyen Ba Ke
- Ground handling in Nhon Trach 2 Power Plant by vacuum pumping technology – by Eng. Do Tran Nam, FECON’s Head of Procurement and Project Management Department.
- Management of complex underground project, international experiences – by Associate Prof. Dr.Nguyen Ba Ke
At the seminar, Eng. Do Tran Nam, FECON’s Head of Procurement and project management Department, Executive Director of the project in Nhon Trach 2 power plant gave his report on “Ground handling in Nhon Trach 2 Power Plant by vacuum pumping technology”
His report gave an overview of the project, its conditions, design criteria, calculations, and actual results of construction in Nhon Trach 2 Power Plant. With the actual observation and quality control measure, it showed that the vacuum pumping is the safe, fast and efficient method to handle soft ground. It reached the minimum cost reduction of 30% compared with other methods, 50% processor time saving, thus, can be applied to other projects, and especially workable in the context of Vietnam. The report was highly appreciated in the conference. The participants also gave the orientation of activities in research, review and application of underground construction for high building, construction and construction management of urban underground projects in Vietnam currently as well as for the next period. The seminar was considered very successful.
