GEOTEC HANOI 2016: Geotechnical engineering helps people cope with natural disasters

According to Professor Ikuto Towhata - Vice Chairman of International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), the former Chairman of the Japanese Geotechnical Society – geotechnical engineering can build a solid foundation to build houses and help people escape from  natural disasters such as floods, landslides, ... The message above was mentioned by Professor Ikuto Towhata at the opening ceremony of GEOTEC HANOI 2016 conference organized on 24^th Nov 2016 in Hanoi.

Given the concerns that the geotechnical engineering has not been totally cared yet, Professor Towhata said: "The problem   is that not many people know about geotechnical engineering and the importance of the underground. They do not want to pay for their own safety until the natural disasters occur& threaten  human’s life ". Therefore, he expressed his expectation that GEOTEC HANOI conference is an opportunity for the scientists to share their knowledge, managers and  corporates understand the importance of geotechnical engineering in the future, especially when the economy grows, means of transportation as subway, high-speed rail   become urgent needs. From the experience as construction workers, Mr.Pham Viet Khoa – Chairman of Organising Committee of GEOTEC HANOI 2016 Conference, Chairman  of FECON Corporation – said: "Vietnam is a country having complex geological conditions with many threats of natural disasters and climate change. Thus, That selecting suitable foundation solutions for infrastructure is extremely important. The unfit solution can lead to one of two consequences: unsafety leading to permeability, subsidence, cracks, landslides or too wasteful due to designing, constructing excess than required. The mission of the scientists& specialists is finding the optimal solutions for each specific requirement, applying environmental friendly technolog and lowest price ".

According to Mr.Khoa, Government has currenly set up special priority policies for  infrastructure development in all industries and sectors. This is an opportunity for scientists,  specialists and  corporates to promote their knowledge and resources in order to contributing to  infrastructure development in particular and socio-economic development in general. "GEOTEC HANOI 2016 is an opportunity for  local and international scientists connecting, learning - exchange and together exploring, applying scientific achievements in the world. At the same time, scientists, managers and enterprises quickly apply   advanced scientific achievements & technologies to implement specific tasks in accordance with the policy of infrastructure development of the local government  towards three important criteria: fast, efficient and sustainable. "- Mr. Khoa said.

Highly appreciating the significance of GEOTEC HANOI conferences, Deputy of Ministry of Transport - Nguyen Hong Truong said: " in the spirit that sustainable development strategy in Vietnam has been approved by the government, The Ministry of Transport has  built a sustainable development program for the sector, which orientating that  activities related to public transport construction need to minimize the impact on the environment, reduce costs, and ensure safe conditions for the people ". At once, he also expressed that the conference would be the  premise for  shorten the science and technology gap in geotechnical engineering field in particular and in infrastructure development in general between Vietnam and other developedcountries.  These knowledge  and experience will be researched to apply in the implementation of the sustainable  strategy in traffic transport development by the Ministry of Transport.
